What is gel polish and why it chips after a few days?

I’ve been doing enhancements for 7 years now and nail care for over 12 years and I still have this question, why do some nails don’t hold on to gel as they are supposed to? Is it gel? Is it prep? Is it the condition of the nails you’re working on that causes it? For the gel polish to stay on your nails it has a few major requirements: the nails have to be healthy (strong and hydrated). If the natural nail plate is thin and damaged, it bends creating mini cracks which will result in compromising gel polish and breakage of the seal. The preparation of the nail is also crucial. The nail professional is supposed to push the cuticles (dead tissue) with a spatula, dehydrate the nail to ensure clean and oil free surface for application. Now you’re ready for gel polish. You need to make sure not to have any extra gel polish on the skin adjacent to the nail for proper seal. If the work is done incorrectly and sloppy it may result in premature gel polish breakage. Gel polish is a nail polish with gel properties. It has to be cured in UV/LED lamp to ensure proper curing. If it’s applied and taken off correctly by a nail professional, it doesn’t cause any damage to your natural nail. It actually helps to keep your nail stronger and gives it time and opportunity to grow while it’s under the gel as it serves as a shield for the natural nail plate. It has to be treated with the cuticle conditioning oil daily to keep it hydrated. Because you have to cure it in the lamp, some people do question the radiation issue. I was taught by CND there’s no harmful exposure to your nails/skin when it cures under the lamp. The exposure is minimal. As a whole gel polish is a great product. It doesn’t require any drying time, it’s cured right away in UV/LED lamp. It stays shiny, no chipping and reapplying for 2 weeks. It’s hassle free, convenient and affordable.
